A 2-inch receiver on one truck may be rated for 3500 pounds while a 2-inch receiver on another truck is rated for 12000 pounds. The same open size but two completely different capacities. When hauling horses, the difference in capacity makes a big difference compared to hauling a load of lumber. What Is a Hitch Receiver?

A hitch receiver is the square metal tubing attached to your vehicle’s frame that all other items are connected to. However, the hitch receiver is only part of a larger hitch assembly. The components of a complete hitch assembly are:

  • Receiver Tube – The rectangular portion of the hitch assembly which includes the opening through which everything else fits. Usually welded or bolted to the vehicle’s frame. The measurement of the receiver tube will tell you “what size” your hitch receiver is.
  • Hitch Pin & Hitch Clip – These include the pin and clip that attach to the receiver tube and keep the ball mount or accessories from coming loose.
  • Ball Mount – The component that attaches to the hitch assembly and supports the hitch ball. Ball mounts can be designed with a fixed drop height, an adjustable drop height, or be designed for use with a load leveling system for weight distribution.
  • Draw Bar – An alternate term often referred to when referring to the hitch ball mounting bar. More common terms include: draw bar, ball mount shank, or even tow bar depending upon how simple the application may be.

Standard Hitch Receiver Sizes

1-1/4 Inch Receiver

These are probably the most common receivers you will come across. They are mainly used on the lighter end of the spectrum for smaller SUVs, crossovers, sedans, and those that have been retrofitted with light-duty hitches. For a small utility trailer or a light single horse trailer, they may work okay. However, there are limits as to what they can tow.

Vehicles common to this class: Crossover vehicles; Small SUVs; Sedans using after-market hitches.

Range of Weight Towing: Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) ranges from 2,000 lbs to 3,500 lbs, while Tongue Weight (TW) ranges from 200 lbs to 350 lbs.

Restrictions: There is no standard definition of “light” when referring to towing a horse trailer. This includes the smallest of single horse setups. Even if you do get a single horse in a light load trailer, you would still need to consider the limitations of the frame and mounting points of the vehicle that is equipped with one of these receivers. For regular towing of horses, this size receiver will restrict your options.

2 Inch Receiver

This is the standard used by most industries for all types of towing applications. The reason there are so many applications for a 2″ receiver is that it is the “standard” for most full-size SUVs, pickups, horse trailers, utility trailers, campers, and much else.

Full-size SUVs; Suburban, Tahoe, Expedition, etc., usually have a 2-inch receiver installed as part of their towing package from the manufacturer.

Most half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickup trucks also use a 2-inch receiver. However, the rating associated with the opening of these receivers can vary greatly depending upon the truck.

Most two-horse bumper pull trailers are designed using a 2-inch receiver and a class III or IV hitch.

Landscape type utility trailers, small equipment trailers, and general purpose utility trailers are generally built around a 2-inch receiver.

Lightweight and medium-sized travel trailers generally will use a 2-inch coupling to be compatible with a tow vehicle.

Why is it the standard? A 2-inch receiver has proven itself to be an ideal balance between being able to handle heavy towing loads while still providing economical access to parts and attachments. Because manufacturers of vehicles and trailers alike design their products based on this size, you will have the greatest number of choices for your application at this size.

2-1/2 Inch Receiver

If you are using your truck for heavy-duty hauling, you will likely see that most have 2-1/2″ receivers.

This size is used by 3/4 ton & 1 ton pickup trucks designed for heavy-duty towing in addition to some heavy-duty aftermarket hitches.

They exist because once you start hauling larger stock-type trailers, large gooseneck-style trailer loads (using a gooseneck-to-receiver adapter), or other heavy equipment, a 2″ receiver can become a restriction. Adding the additional .5 inches of steel provides the receiver with both more surface area as well as added strength, allowing it to support greater tongue weight without bending or breaking down due to excessive fatigue over time.

3 Inch Receiver

Most horse trailer owners will never need a 3-inch receiver, but it’s worth knowing it exists so you understand where the range tops out.

At the high end of the scale, 3-inch (7.62 cm) receivers are found primarily in commercial/ fleet type trailers.

Examples include: Tow Trucks, Large Equipment Hauler Trailers, & Fleet Vehicles which are designed to carry heavy loads as their primary function on a daily basis.

This is also the most commonly used/recommended size by municipal and commercial fleets looking for maximum reliability with the heaviest possible weight capacity requirements.

How Hitch Receiver Sizes Relate to Hitch Classes

Receiver size and hitch class are closely related, but they are different things. Class tells you about the weight rating and intended use, while receiver size tells you about the physical opening. Typically they line up like this:

Notice that both Class III and Class IV can use a 2-inch receiver, but their weight ratings are quite different. That misconception will be addressed later, and you should keep that in mind as you shop.

How to Measure Your Hitch Receiver

Measuring your receiver yourself is easy. Here’s how to do it right!

Step one: identify your receiver tube. The receiver tube is a square hole installed underneath your rear bumper. In most cases, it will be centered or slightly off-center based on the make of your vehicle.

Step two: Measure inside opening. Take an inside-to-inside measurement using a tape Measure through the square opening. The inside measurement is the basis for classifying your receiver as one of the four official sizes (1-1/4″, 2″, 2-1/2″, or 3″).

Step three: Measure outside dimension for reference. Taking a measurement from outside-to-outside will provide you with information about how thick the walls are of your receiver tube. Although this measurement doesn’t determine which size category your receiver fits into, it will give you some insight into how durable your receiver is.

Step four: determine whether worn receivers are larger than normal. An older or overused receiver may have some minor wear at the opening edge and/or where the hitch pins go through. If you find that your receiver measures somewhere between one of our available standard sizes, measure the same area multiple times and use the smallest of these readings.

How to Tell Which Hitch Class You Already Have

If your vehicle came with a factory hitch, you probably don’t need to measure anything. Here are places to start looking:

Manufacturer stickers: Many hitches have labels riveted or stamped directly onto the receiver listing class and weight ratings. Door stickers or towing guides often list factory hitch class along with payload and capacity too. 

VIN lookup: Dealers or manufacturer sites can usually pull exact options, including class, using your VIN. 

Receiver stamping: Look closely at the metal of the receiver tube itself. Many are directly stamped with class ratings and weight limits into steel. 

Owner’s manual: Tow sections usually list class and maximum ratings specific to trim and configuration. If a hitch was added later, check installation papers or receipt, or look up the stamp number on the hitch through the manufacturer’s website.

Can Two 2 Inch Receivers Have Different Weight Ratings?

It’s easy to get misled with this – in fact, more often than just about anything else in this manual. A 2-in. receiver will tell you what the opening is. But it won’t give you an indication of how much weight the receiver is able to hold on its own.

Here are some reasons why there is such variation in rated capacities, even though the opening of the receiver is the same (e.g., 2-in.):

Steel gauge: If two receivers have the same-sized openings but were manufactured using steel gauges of different thicknesses, the one made from the heavier steel can be expected to withstand a greater amount of stress prior to bending/fatigue.

Cross-member strength: The type of frame cross-member to which the receiver is attached also has a large impact on how loads are distributed. For example, a receiver that is attached to a full-welded cross-member may be able to distribute loads in a way that would result in less stress on the receiver than a receiver that was bolted to a lighter frame section.

Attachment method: The method used to attach the receiver to the vehicle’s frame (i.e., fully welded vs. bolted to frame sections with varying numbers of attachments) has a direct impact on the true weight-carrying ability of the receiver.

Testing methods: Each hitch manufacturer tests and rates their hitches using differing standards and methodologies. In other words, two receivers that appear virtually identical can have significantly different certified maximum weight ratings due to differences in design, testing methodology, etc.

In short, do not rely solely upon appearance to determine a receiver’s maximum weight-carrying capacity. Go by either the manufacturer’s stamped rating or their stated rating for your particular application.

The way you tow a horse trailer is much different from how you tow a load of lumber or a boat. Many general towing guides do not include this area because live cargo makes an enormous difference in the calculations.

Movement of live cargo: As a horse adjusts its position to maintain equilibrium, it will move its body weight forward when turning or stopping and backward when starting again. The trailer then transmits that movement to the hitch attached to the back of the truck. Therefore, live cargo has greater effects on the amount of tongue weight placed upon a hitch. Because of this, there is no substitute for using enough margin when selecting a hitch.

Tongue Weight: Tongue weight is usually higher than expected based upon the total length of a horse trailer, especially if the horses have been loaded so they sit closer to the front of the trailer. It is essential to make certain the hitch and receiver used to support your trailer are rated higher than what is required by your loaded trailer and have ample additional capacity beyond the requirements of your trailer.

Distribution of weight: A weight distributing hitch is a necessity when towing a heavy bumper pull horse trailer as it will help keep both the truck and trailer in a straight line while traveling down the road and provide better braking control. A great number of two-horse setups require a weight-distributing hitch after all factors such as tack, hay, water, etc., are included in the total weight of the trailer.

Braking: When a vehicle brakes, there is less friction generated under those conditions and therefore, a harder stop occurs. Since a horse trailer contains live cargo, the manner in which it responds to hard braking is very different than a static load. If you plan to use your trailer brakes while stopped or slowed down considerably, you should check to see that your brakes are working correctly and properly sized for your trailer. In addition, prior to utilizing your brake controller while stopped in traffic, you should check out your brake controller.

Sway: Sway refers to how easily a trailer moves from side to side and can be caused by many things, including the movement of the horses within the trailer. Although swaying can occur even without live cargo, the swaying motion can be greatly increased due to wind resistance and/or sudden movements made in changing lanes. Using a well-matched hitch and/or a properly designed weight distribution system may help alleviate some degree of swaying. However, proper driving techniques also play a significant role in reducing swaying and maintaining safety while towing your trailer.

Loading Horses: When loading horses into the trailer, it can significantly affect the balance of your trailer. An unevenly loaded trailer (i.e., one horse in a two-horse trailer) will cause an imbalance in the tongue weight and will potentially create issues related to stability and maneuverability that most users cannot anticipate.

Common Mistakes When Choosing a Hitch Receiver

Choosing Bigger = Higher Capacity. Larger openings do NOT always equal a higher weight rating. Look for the actual certified weight rating of the hitch receiver you are considering.

Overlooking Tongue Weight. The most common oversight made by owners is focusing solely on Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) and overlooking the fact that Tongue Weight (TW) also has its own weight limit, which can exceed at lower GTW ratings than originally thought.

Damaged or Worn Accessories. Damaging or stretching ball mounts, hitch pins, or couplers greatly reduces their effectiveness and will likely break long before they reach their listed weight ratings.

Improperly Using Adapters. Step-up adapters and reducer sleeves change the effective weight rating of your hitch setup, and using these components incorrectly could be a hazardous situation due to failure at much lower weights.

Mistaken Use of Different Hitch Classes. Using a different class hitch receiver (Class III vs Class V, etc.) than the hitch mount and/or other hardware used will result in only being able to haul the maximum weight of the lowest rated component in the setup.

Incorrect Size/Type of Hitch Pin. An incorrect size or type of hitch pin can cause movement in the connection, or worst case, cause the ball mount to come loose over time.

Damage to Receivers. Any damage such as rust, cracks, or bending of the hitch receiver will always lower the true world weight rating regardless of the manufacturer’s original listing.

Do Hitch Receiver Adapters Reduce Towing Capacity?

In the majority of cases, yes; this is yet another place where many truck owners are surprised when their overall towable weight has been reduced because of an extension.

Extensions for hitch receivers: these are simply hitches extended backward, increasing the lever on the hitch receiver while decreasing the maximum weight that may be safely towed with them relative to a hitch mounted directly. Generally speaking, the greater the distance of the extension, the lower will be the safe weight.

Reducer sleeves for ball mounts: reducer sleeves enable a user to install a smaller ball mount (i.e., 1-1/4″) in a larger receiver (i.e., 2″). In this instance, the rated weight you may utilize is determined solely by the smallest size among those listed above, i.e., receiver, reducer sleeve, ball mount and ball.

Hitch rise adapters: a hitch rise adapter raises the height of your hitch so as to bring your trailer to a level position. While there can be variations in design and the extent of “rise”, generally these types of hitches can provide less than full utilization of your vehicle’s safe towing weight potential vs. standard drop type hitches.

Hitch drop adapters: similar to rise adapters, longer drop hitches that have increased their distance from the receiver face can also decrease your vehicle’s safe towing weight capability relative to a shorter, more direct mounting configuration.

Weight reduction: As a general rule, any adapter that adds length, changes size, or adds leverage away from the receiver face reduces your safe towing capacity to some degree. Always check the adapter’s own rating, and use the lowest rating in the chain (vehicle, receiver, adapter, ball mount, ball) as your real limit.

Signs Your Hitch Receiver Should Be Replaced

Many vehicle owners don’t ever consider their hitch receivers until they fail or have an issue. So here are some things you need to check on your hitch receiver frequently.

Rust: Light surface rust is normal, light enough that it is purely aesthetic; however, heavy or flaking rust will weaken the structural integrity of the receiver.

Stretched out hitch pin holes: If your hitch pin hole has elongated to look like an egg as opposed to being round, then the receiver was put through a lot more stress than intended and needs to be replaced.

Frame cracks: Any visible crack (or cracks) in the receiver tube and/or where the receiver mounts onto the frame is a “do not tow” situation. The receiver needs to be either repaired/re-welded or replaced before towing again.

Cracks/Breakage/Seperation of Welds: A cracked, broken, or loose separation of welds on the mounting points means the receiver is no longer mounted to the frame securely.

Corrosion: Corrosion within the receiver tube may also cause issues with the securement of the ball mount, which could lead to play/loose movement when loaded.

Damage from Impact: Even if it appears to be a minor dent/bend or other type of visible impact damage to the receiver tube, this will likely change how the receiver functions under load. This type of damage should be evaluated by a professional prior to towing again.

What size hitch receiver do I have? Check the owner’s manual, the sticker or stamping on the receiver itself, or measure the inside opening of the tube with a tape measure. Common sizes are 1-1/4″, 2″, 2-1/2″, and 3 inches.
